Tutorial software is designed to deliver complete instruction on a topic similar to what a teacher would deliver in the classroom. Tutorials are meant to be self-contained and help students learn a topic without the help of any other materials. These applications tend to have reading, video, interactives, and some kind of practice sequence or assessment activity.
Tutorial software can offer some considerable advantages to a teacher. Because they function as stand alone instructional units, tutorials can be effective in helping students that have fallen behind or are consistently struggling with the content to get remedial instruction on their own time or when the teacher is busy or unable to help the student directly. Tutorials are also excellent options for students who are flying ahead of the rest of the class. How do you keep that desire to learn burning? Keep feeding the flame with more rich content. With a little differentiation in the classroom with assignments and the help of tutorial programs, a teacher can maintain a cohesive and collaborative classroom environment with students at different levels.
At Happy Kids, tutorial software is not easily integrated into the ASLA classroom. As parents in Taiwan expect teachers to do the teaching, it is not a good idea to outsource your instruction to a tutorial program. They have utility as a learning station in the classroom to help students review skills already covered by the teacher. Students can partake in the tutorial of review skill before doing some practice. This software also works well at Happy Kids as resources for students falling behind or are more advanced. Below are a couple of examples of effective language arts tutorial programs.
Starfall
Starfall offers a suite of learning tools for students. While it has drill and practice features, it also is a full-fledged phonics and reading tutor. The phonics and reading pages take students step by step through the different sounds and reading selections. These instructional features combined with the drill and practice make a great tutorial for early readers (Pre-K to Grade 1).
Grammaropolis
Grammaropolis is a fun website that offers an interesting and well built tutorial on the different parts of speech. While many of the practice activities require an account to access, the tutorial portion of the site is free. This resource is excellent for helping students who are struggling with identifying and using the different parts of speech in English. Use it for all grade levels!
